ALS walk

I plan to participate in a fund raising walk for the ALS Association on September 19th. My cousin Michael Fitzgerald, in his early fifties, has been coping with this progressive disease, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, for over five years. I’ll be joining his team, Fitzy’s Family and Friends.
You can learn more on my personal page at the ALSA website, make a contribution, or sign up to walk.
Here are some excerpts from Michael’s recent email update:
I am encouraged that I am still here when so many, including many friends,
succumb to this terrible disease so much faster than me. I am often
reminded of those subtle little things that are unaffected by this
disease. I still think clearly, can feel the touch of hands or the cat’s
fur upon my arm. The range-of-motion exercises keep me in shape and are
something I look forward to. I enjoy hugs, and even have my care-givers
taught to raise my arm to reciprocate. So next you see me give me a hug
or take my right hand and shake it (gently). . .
I want to give a heart-felt thanks for contribution to the ALSA and
special needs trust over the past year. I am at the point in the
progression of the ALS where I need specialized 24/7 care. Thank
goodness that Cindy has so much medical experience. However, we have to
take money monthly out of my retirement to make ends meet. (*I*NSURANCE
AND MEDICARE DO NOT PAY FOR CAREGIVERS, AND I HAVE 2 EXCELLENT PAID CAREGIVERS WORTH THEIR WEIGHT IN GOLD). If you want to help us out I
have an account at Wells Fargo Bank called Michael Fitzgerald’s Special
Needs Trust. The account number is 6070725715. The other option for
giving that benefit me is the fund-raising efforts for the ALSA. Each
year I have a team that participates in the Walk to Defeat ALS. The ALSA
funds research and advocacy, but for me they also provide funds for my
ALS case-worker, helps fund the multi-disciplinary clinic that I attend
and the ALS support groups. The contribution is also tax deductible.
This year I am only going to do the Monterey Walk. It is a beautiful
walk around Lake Estero. I encourage you to come join us on September
19^th .

  1. Thanks Sylvia for joining the cause and writing such a nice blog for Michael and ALS. Looking forward to seeing you there if not sooner.

How was your visit with my mother?

    Cheers,
