One last thing before I leave. Last night the Santa Cruz Peace Chorale (of which I am a member this year) sang before the start of the showing of The People Speak as part of the Reel Work film festival:
“Narrated by acclaimed historian Howard Zinn and based on his best-selling books, A People’s History of the United States and, with Anthony Arnove, Voices of a People’s History, The People Speak illustrates the relevance of these passionate historical moments to our society today and reminds us never to take liberty for granted.”
I stayed for the film and it was well worth seeing. Like Zinn’s writing, it gives a perspective of history that we don’t learn in school and in the media: the perspective of the common people whose struggles led to such changes as the eight hour day, the abolition of slavery, and desegregation in the South.
