On a weekend camping trip to the Indians, formally the Milpitas Special Interest Area of the Los Padres National Forest, bordering on Ft. Hunter Liggett, we had a friendly and informative visit from the ranger. She told us that the forest service is attempting to develop a management plan for the area.
If you’ve never been there, the wildflowers are incredible in the oak savannahs in spring, especially this year. The area was inhabited by the Salinan people from prehistoric times and contains archeological features. We saw many acorn grinding holes, though we didn’t find the petroglyphs.
The aim of a management plan is to protect the area from careless activity which can destroy the rock outcroppings with their arecheological features, and the vegetation. The forest service is actively seeking comments from those who use and love the area. For more information go to the Ventana Wilderness Alliance website.
