Eve Bunting

Eve lived in Santa Cruz for the last several years of her life. She and her husband came here from Ireland and she had a beautiful Irish accent. She died in October after complications from a fall at age 94. I was fortunate to be in a writing group with her and to get to know her. She published her first children’s book in 1971 and her most recent was published this year, Alligators, Alligators. It’s a lovely story about a little boy who is able to charm wild animals when he plays his flute.

Eve published over 250 books in all, mostly picture books. Her written language was as beautiful as her spoken, with a great feel for the rhythm and for rhyme when she used it. Her books addressed many serious issues in ways that children could understand, things such as homelessness, riots, and immigration. The members of our writing group got together this week to read some of her books and remember Eve.
